Born on February 20, 1971, in Lahti, Finland, Litmanen began his football journey at a young age. He made his professional debut for Reipas in Finland's top division, Mestaruussarja, at just 16 years old.
After four seasons with Reipas, Litmanen moved to HJK, Finland's biggest club, in 1991. A year later, he joined MyPa, where he was coached by Harri Kampman. It was during this period that he began to make a name for himself as a skilled and agile player.
