Born on February 20, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, Culver grew up in a family of athletes, with his father, Hiawatha Culver Jr., being a pastor and his mother, Regina, a director of a local Head Start program. He moved to Lubbock, Texas, at the age of three and grew up playing football and soccer before focusing on basketball in middle school.
Culver attended Coronado High School in Lubbock, where he played under head coach Randy Dean and quickly made a name for himself as a talented player. He averaged 20 points per game as a junior, leading his team to the 6A regional semifinals and earning the title of Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
Culver committed to Texas Tech University on September 22, 2016, and went on to have an impressive freshman season. He debuted for Texas Tech on November 10, 2017, scoring 2 points in 16 minutes against South Alabama. He recorded a season high in non-conference play against Wofford on November 22, scoring 21 points, and was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week.
Throughout his freshman season, Culver consistently impressed, earning himself a spot on the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and being named to the NCAA Tournament West Regional All-Tournament Team. He finished the season averaging 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.
After his impressive freshman season, Culver declared for the 2019 NBA draft, where he was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 24th overall pick. He was subsequently traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves and made his NBA debut on October 23, 2019.
Although his NBA career is still in its early stages, Culver has already made an impact, earning himself a spot in the NBA G League and continuing to hone his skills.
