Jarrod Dyson is a former American professional baseball center fielder who made a name for himself in the Major League Baseball (MLB) with his exceptional speed and defensive skills. With a career spanning over a decade, Dyson played for several teams, including the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Born on August 15, 1984, in McComb, Mississippi, Dyson attended McComb High School, where he excelled in baseball and football as a running back. Despite earning All-Division honors, Dyson was overlooked by most scouts due to his slight stature. He then attended Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he tied the single-season record with seven triples and set a record with 47 runs.
Dyson was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 50th round (1,475th overall) of the 2006 amateur draft. He signed with the team for $5,000 and began his professional career that year, playing for the AZL Royals and hitting .273 with no home runs and 19 stolen bases in 51 games.
Dyson spent several years in the minor leagues, playing for various teams, including the Burlington Bees, Wilmington Blue Rocks, and Northwest Arkansas Naturals. In 2009, he split the season between the Bees and Naturals, hitting a combined .276 with 46 stolen bases. He began 2010 in the minor leagues, splitting the season between the AZL Royals, Blue Rocks, Naturals, and Omaha Royals, hitting .299 with 24 stolen bases in 71 games.
Dyson was first called up to the major leagues in September 2010, joining the Royals and getting some playing time in center field. He played in 18 games and hit .211/.286/.404 with nine stolen bases in 57 at-bats. He made the team out of spring training in 2011 and became a regular in the Royals' outfield, playing in 102 games and hitting .235/.310/.343 with 11 stolen bases.
