Born on March 1, 1988, in Brownsville, Tennessee, Varnado graduated from Haywood High School in 2006 as a four-star recruit. He went on to play for Mississippi State in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the NCAA Division I from 2006 to 2010.
During his college career, Varnado led the NCAA in blocks for the 2007-2008 season with 157 blocks, tying Shaquille O'Neal's record for most blocks in a season in the SEC. He broke that single-season record the following year with 170 blocks.
On November 21, 2009, Varnado became the SEC's all-time career block record holder with 413 total blocks in his career, surpassing O'Neal's career block record of 412. He went on to become the NCAA's Division I all-time shot blocker, passing Wojciech Myrdas' record of 535 career blocks.
Varnado's impressive defensive skills earned him numerous awards and accolades, including:
Drafted by the Miami Heat with the 41st pick in the 2010 NBA draft, Varnado opted to play for Carmatic Pistoia, an Italian team in the second division, instead of joining the Heat. He played 33 games with Pistoia, averaging 15.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.
Varnado currently plays for Piratas de La Guaira of the Venezuelan Basketball League, continuing to showcase his defensive expertise on the court.
