Born on December 25, 1967, in Hermosa Beach, California, Thirsk grew up in a hub of punk rock activity. It was here that he met his future bandmates, Jim Lindberg, Fletcher Dragge, and Byron McMackin, and formed Pennywise in 1988.
With Thirsk's driving bass lines and Lindberg's powerful vocals, Pennywise quickly gained a local following and eventually signed with Epitaph Records in 1991. The band's early albums, including A Word From the Wise (1989), Wildcard (1989), and Pennywise (1991), showcased Thirsk's unique bass style and his ability to craft catchy, high-energy punk rock songs.
Despite his success, Thirsk struggled with personal demons, including alcoholism and depression. On July 29, 1996, at the age of 28, Thirsk tragically took his own life, leaving behind a grieving band, family, and friends.
In the aftermath of Thirsk's death, Pennywise decided to continue making music, dedicating their performances to their fallen bandmate at Warped Tour 1996. The band later brought in Randy Bradbury from One Hit Wonder to fill Thirsk's void and went on to write an album of new material, much of which addressed anti-suicide themes.
One of Pennywise's most iconic songs, "Bro Hymn," was originally written by Thirsk as a tribute to his friends Tim Colvin, Carlos Canton, and Tom Nichols, who had died in separate accidents. The band rerecorded the song after Thirsk's death, renaming it "Bro Hymn Tribute" and dedicating it to their fallen bandmate.
