Jason Wingreen, an American actor, is best known for his roles as bartender Harry Snowden on the hit CBS sitcom All in the Family (1977-1979) and as the original voice of Boba Fett in the iconic Star Wars franchise. With a career spanning over five decades, Wingreen left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.
Born on October 9, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family, Wingreen grew up in Howard Beach, Queens. He attended John Adams High School and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1941. During his college years, he participated in the Varsity Dramatic Society, which sparked his passion for the performing arts.
Wingreen's original plan was to become a newspaper reporter, having written about high school sports for the Brooklyn Eagle during his high school years. However, after serving with the United States Army Air Force during World War II, he pursued a career in acting, studying at New York's New School with the aid of the G.I. Bill.
Wingreen co-founded the Circle in the Square Theatre company in New York's Greenwich Village and made his Broadway debut in two 1954 plays, The Girl on the Via Flaminia and Fragile Fox. His breakthrough role came in 1958 when he played Nichols in the 20th Century Fox production The Bravados.
In the 1960s, Wingreen became a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He continued to work in film and television, landing the role of Harry Snowden on All in the Family, which he reprised on the continuation series Archie Bunker's Place (1979-1983).
Wingreen's most iconic role, however, is that of the bounty hunter Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). English actor Jeremy Bulloch physically portrayed the character, while Wingreen provided the voice. For the DVD release of the film in 2004, Wingreen's lines were re-recorded by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) established that Boba Fett was a clone of Jango Fett, played by Morrison. Wingreen's contribution to the Star Wars franchise remains unforgettable, solidifying his place in pop culture history.
Throughout his career, Wingreen was nominated for several awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on All in the Family.
