Born in Ottawa, Illinois, Rabe developed a passion for games at a tender age, mastering checkers, chess, and euchre by the age of 7, and later board wargames in high school. Her introduction to the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons at the inaugural Windycon games convention in 1974 marked the beginning of her lifelong fascination with the genre.
After graduating from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, Rabe embarked on a career as a newspaper reporter. Her experience in the industry eventually led her to TSR, Inc., where she served as the head of the Role-Playing Game Association and editor of the Polyhedron magazine.
