Born on July 21, 1953, to Chinese parents Norma Wong Yee and Oscar Fatt, Jeff grew up in Casino, New South Wales, where his parents owned a large retail store. His great-grandfather, who immigrated to Sydney in 1896, was a successful banana businessman.
Jeff's early ambitions lay in architecture, and he earned a Bachelor of Arts in industrial design. However, it was his passion for music that ultimately led him to become the "bush kid" who "let his keyboard do most of the talking," as Anthony Field would later describe him.
Before joining the Wiggles, Jeff was a member of the 1980s and 1990s pop band The Cockroaches, alongside fellow Wiggle Anthony Field. He joined the band in 1981, serving as their keyboardist, and played a crucial role in their success.
After The Cockroaches disbanded in the early 1990s, Anthony Field asked Jeff to help record The Wiggles' first album. And so began Jeff's long and storied career with the beloved children's group.
As the Wiggles' resident keyboardist, Jeff brought his unique sound and energy to their music. But it was his tendency to doze off on stage that earned him the nickname "Sleepy Jeff" and inspired the iconic catchphrase "Wake Up, Jeff!"
