Hornacek attended Komarek Elementary School, Gurrie Middle School, and Lyons Township High School, before joining Iowa State University (ISU) in 1981.
As a walk-on player for the ISU Cyclones, Hornacek redshirted in his freshman year and went on to play from 1982 to 1986. Under the guidance of coach Johnny Orr, he blossomed into an all-conference player in the Big Eight Conference, leading the Cyclones to the Sweet Sixteen of the 1986 NCAA tournament. His phenomenal performance in the tournament, including a buzzer-beating 26-foot jumper to defeat Miami University, earned him a place in ISU's history books.
The Phoenix Suns drafted Hornacek with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 1986 NBA draft. Over the course of his 14-year playing career, he played for the Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and Utah Jazz, retiring in 2000 with impressive statistics, including 8,566 points, 2,385 assists, and 2,235 rebounds.
