A talented singer-songwriter and dancer who rose to fame in the 1980s with his unique blend of pop, rock, and R&B, known for his energetic live performances and hit singles like "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off".
Jermaine Stewart, an American R&B singer, is best known for his iconic 1986 hit single "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off," a sultry, synth-heavy anthem that peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. This catchy tune not only solidified Stewart's position as a rising star in the 80s music scene but also catapulted him to international fame, charting top ten in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Born on September 7, 1957, in Columbus, Ohio, Jermaine Stewart's journey to stardom began in 1972, when his family relocated to Chicago, Illinois. It was here that Stewart took his first steps toward a career in entertainment, eventually becoming a dancer on the locally produced television show Soul Train. During this time, he befriended fellow dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, with whom he would later collaborate.
After Soul Train relocated to Los Angeles, Stewart auditioned to become a member of the R&B group Shalamar, alongside Watley and Daniel. Although he lost the lead vocalist spot to Gary Mumford, Stewart toured with the group as a dancer for several years, honing his skills and building connections within the industry.
A chance encounter with Mikey Craig of Culture Club in London proved to be the turning point in Stewart's career. Recognizing his talent as a singer, Craig helped Stewart put together a demo tape, which led to an opportunity to sing background vocals on Culture Club's song "Miss Me Blind." This exposure secured Stewart a recording contract with Arista Records.
Stewart's debut album, The Word Is Out, although moderately successful, laid the groundwork for his sophomore effort, Frantic Romantic (1986). This album spawned the hit single "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off," catapulting Stewart to international stardom. Frantic Romantic peaked at number 30 on the US R&B Albums chart and number 90 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.
Jermaine Stewart's contributions to the R&B genre and 80s music scene are undeniable. His soulful voice, combined with his infectious energy, left an indelible mark on the industry. Although his life was cut short, Stewart's music continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans alike, solidifying his place as a true legend of 80s R&B.
