His mother, Christine Teeny Jarrett, worked as a ticket vendor for promoters Nick Gulas and Roy Welch, exposing Jarrett to the world of wrestling. He soon found himself selling programs for Gulas and Welch, sparking a passion that would drive his future endeavors.
Jarrett's entrepreneurial spirit took hold early, as he began promoting professional wrestling events at the age of 14. He worked tirelessly, renting buildings, advertising shows, constructing the ring, selling tickets, and stocking refreshments. After graduating from Peabody College in 1963, Jarrett briefly worked as a purchasing agent for the Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company before pursuing a full-time career in professional wrestling.
In 1977, Jarrett founded the Memphis-based Continental Wrestling Association (CWA), which became a cornerstone of professional wrestling in the Mid-Southern United States. The CWA's success led to a merger with the Dallas-based World Class Championship Wrestling in 1989, forming the United States Wrestling Association (USWA). Jarrett's partnership with Jerry Lawler, a fellow promoter and wrestler, proved instrumental in shaping the USWA's growth. In 2002, Jarrett co-founded NWA-TNA (now Impact Wrestling) in Nashville with his son Jeff Jarrett, selling his controlling interest to Panda Energy International later that year.
