A U.S. Senator from Kansas since 2011, serving as the Chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, and known for his work on veterans' issues and healthcare reform.
Jerry Moran is a name synonymous with Kansas politics, particularly in the Republican Party. As the senior United States senator from Kansas, Moran has made a significant impact on the party's efforts, leading to a Republican Senate majority in 2014.
Moran was born on May 29, 1954, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Madeline Eleanor (née Fletcher) and Raymond Edwin Ray Moran. He was raised in Plainville, Kansas, and attended Fort Hays State University before enrolling at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1976. While attending the University of Kansas, he worked as a summer intern for U.S. Representative Keith Sebelius in 1974, during the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon.
Moran worked as a banker before receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1982. He then practiced private law and served as the state special assistant attorney general from 1982 to 1985 and deputy attorney of Rooks County from 1987 to 1995. His experience in law and public service set the stage for his future political career.
In 1989, Moran was elected to the Kansas Senate, where he served for eight years, including two years as majority leader. In 1996, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Kansas's 1st congressional district, and served seven terms with little electoral opposition. Moran's experience in both state and federal legislatures prepared him for his future role as a U.S. senator.
In 2010, Moran was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating fellow U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt in a contentious primary. He was reelected to the Senate in 2016 and 2022. As chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 113th U.S. Congress, Moran led successful Republican efforts in the 2014 election, producing the first Republican Senate majority since 2006.
Moran has been married to his wife, Robba, since 1984, and they have two daughters, Kelsey and Emily. He is a member of the Plainville United Methodist Church and has been involved in various charitable organizations, including the Kansas 4-H Foundation and the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
As a seasoned politician, Moran has left an indelible mark on Kansas politics and the Republican Party. His commitment to public service, combined with his experience in law and government, has made him a respected leader in the Senate. As the senior senator and dean of the Kansas congressional delegation, Moran continues to shape the Republican Party's agenda and represent the interests of Kansans in Washington, D.C.
