Born on May 3, 1989, in Auckland, New Zealand, Bromwich is of Māori descent. He grew up playing junior rugby league for the Manurewa Marlins and later represented Auckland in various age groups, including the Auckland Sea Lions NJC under 18s and Auckland Rugby League under 18s.
In 2007, Bromwich played for the New Zealand Māori under 18s side and later moved to Australia with his family. He played for the Orange Hawks in 2008, earning a spot in the New South Wales Country Rugby League Group 10 under 23s representative team.
Bromwich signed with the Melbourne Storm in 2009 and quickly made a name for himself in the NRL. In his first season, he was voted Toyota Cup NYC under 20s prop forward of the year and was named in the NYC team of the year.
