A multi-talented artist known for her introspective and poetic songwriting, as well as her distinctive vocal style, which blends elements of folk, pop, and rock.
Jewel Kilcher, known simply as Jewel, is a multi-platinum, award-winning American singer-songwriter, poet, and humanitarian activist. With a career spanning over two decades, she has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards.
Born on May 23, 1974, in Payson, Utah, Jewel grew up near Homer, Alaska, where she developed a passion for music at a young age. She began singing and yodeling with her father, Atz Kilcher, a local musician, and was soon performing at local events and festivals.
At 15, Jewel received a partial scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she studied operatic voice. After graduating, she began writing and performing at clubs and coffeehouses in San Diego, California. Her unique voice and style quickly gained attention, and she was offered a recording contract with Atlantic Records.
In 1995, Jewel released her debut album, Pieces of You, which went on to become one of the bestselling debut albums of all time, with sales of over 12 million copies. The album spawned several hit singles, including "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant for Me," and "Foolish Games," all of which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Jewel's subsequent albums, Spirit (1998) and This Way (2001), solidified her position as a rising star in the music industry. However, it was her 2003 album, 0304, that marked a departure from her folk-oriented sound, featuring electronic arrangements and elements of dance-pop.
In 2008, Jewel released her first country album, Perfectly Clear, which debuted atop the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The album featured three singles, including "Stronger Woman," "I Do," and "Til It Feels Like Cheating."
In addition to her music, Jewel has also explored her passion for poetry and acting. In 1998, she released a collection of poetry, and in 1999, she appeared in a supporting role in Ang Lee's Western film, Ride with the Devil, earning critical acclaim for her performance.
Jewel is also known for her humanitarian work, particularly in the area of education and children's welfare. She has worked with organizations such as the homeless shelter, the San Diego Youth and Community Services, and the Surfrider Foundation, among others.
Jewel has won numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including four Grammy nominations, an American Music Award, and a Billboard Music Award. In 2021, she won the sixth season of The Masked Singer as the Queen of Hearts.
Jewel's soulful voice, introspective songwriting, and commitment to social causes have made her a beloved figure in the music industry. Her music has inspired countless fans around the world, and her philanthropic efforts have made a tangible impact on the lives of many.
Jewel's music and message continue to inspire and uplift audiences, cementing her place as a legendary artist and humanitarian.
