James Leslie Angle II was born on September 14, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas. He pursued a degree in political science at Texas Tech University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. Angle furthered his education with a Master of Arts in Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
After completing his education, Angle was drafted into the US Army, serving in Vietnam and Germany. During his time in Germany, he gave tours of Berlin to GIs as part of the special Berlin Brigade. Following his military service, Angle embarked on a journalism career, starting with NPR as a White House correspondent. He covered the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush for seven years.
Angle's dedication to excellence in journalism earned him the Excellence in Financial Journalism Award in 1994 and 1995 while working on Nightline. His reporting prowess also led to him becoming a lead anchor for the Marketplace radio program from 1990 to 1993.
In 1996, Angle was approached by Brit Hume to join the newly launched Fox News channel. He initially served as a nightly contributor to Special Report with Brit Hume and regularly substituted as host for the Friday edition of the program. Angle reported on several pivotal events, including the 1996 presidential election, the impeachment of Bill Clinton, and significant international visits made by Clinton throughout his presidency.
