Jim Beglin: The Voice of Football

Jim Beglin is a renowned Irish former professional footballer and current co-commentator for several prominent sports networks, including RT, CBS Sports, TNT Sports, and Premier League Productions. With a playing career spanning over a decade, Beglin is best known for his stint as a defender for Liverpool FC, where he won numerous accolades, including the League championship and FA Cup.

Early Life and Playing Career

Born on 29 July 1963, Beglin developed a passion for football at a young age. He played schoolboy football in his native city with Bolton and Waterford Bohs before joining Shamrock Rovers in 1980. During his three-year tenure at Milltown, Beglin made four appearances in Europe and scored one goal.

Liverpool FC and International Career

In May 1983, Beglin was signed by Liverpool FC for £20,000, becoming the last signing made by manager Bob Paisley. Under the guidance of Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish, Beglin gradually became a regular in the left-back slot, replacing Alan Kennedy in the 1985-1986 season. He made his debut on 10 November 1984, in a 1-1 league draw with Southampton at Anfield.

Beglin's first goal for the club came on 10 April 1985, in a 4-0 European Cup Semifinal first-leg victory over Panathinaikos at Anfield. His 85th-minute strike put the tie out of reach for the Greek club, and Liverpool went on to win the second leg 1-0, setting up a showdown with Juventus in the final. Although the Heysel Stadium Disaster marred the event, Beglin's performance earned him a spot in the starting lineup.

During his time with Liverpool, Beglin won the League championship and FA Cup, pipping Merseyside rivals Everton to both titles. He also began playing for the Republic of Ireland, earning 15 caps throughout his international career.
