Born on June 27, 1970, in Fullerton, California, Edmonds' parents divorced when he was a child, and he had joint custody. His father's home was just a few miles from Anaheim Stadium, where he would later begin his professional career. Edmonds attended Diamond Bar High School in Diamond Bar, California, and was selected in the seventh round of the 1988 Major League Baseball draft by the California Angels.
Edmonds began his minor league career with the Bend Bucks, the Angels' A-Short Season affiliate in the Northwest League. He played in 35 games, hitting .221 with no home runs and 13 runs batted in. Over the next few years, he was promoted through the ranks, playing for the Quad Cities Angels, Palm Springs Angels, and Midland Angels. In 1992, he was promoted to Double-A with the Midland Angels in the Texas League, where he hit .313 with 13 home runs and 77 RBIs.
Edmonds made his major league debut on September 9, 1993, for the California Angels. He played for the Angels, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cincinnati Reds from 1993 to 2010. Throughout his career, Edmonds was known for his exceptional defensive skills, earning eight Gold Glove Awards and finishing top 10 in National League MVP voting three times. He also was a prolific hitter, with a .284 batting average, 393 home runs, and an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .903.
After retiring from baseball in 2010, Edmonds transitioned to broadcasting, currently serving as a broadcaster for Bally Sports Midwest.
