Born on March 21, 1906, in Greenville, Delaware, Thompson was the youngest of five children to Henry and Mary Wilson Thompson. His father, a wealthy textile manufacturer, and his mother, the daughter of a notable Union general, instilled in him a sense of adventure and entrepreneurial spirit.
Thompson's educational pursuits took him to St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and later to Princeton University, where he graduated in 1928. Representing the United States in the 6Metre Sailing event at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands, was a testament to his athletic prowess.
Postgraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Architecture marked the beginning of Thompson's architectural career. However, his weakness in calculus led him to abandon his degree, and instead, he practiced architecture in New York City with Holden, McLaughlin & Associates from 1931 to 1940. During this period, he designed opulent homes for the East Coast elite and rubbed shoulders with the crème de la crème of society, including the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
In 1941, Thompson's sense of duty called, and he enlisted with the Delaware National Guard. On March 26, 1967, Thompson vanished while on a trip to Malaysia, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
