Born on March 6, 1879, in Taranaki, New Zealand, Hunter came from a farming family. He attended Wanganui Collegiate School, where his passion for rugby began to take shape. He joined the Hawera Rugby Club and was selected to play for Taranaki in 1898 at the tender age of 18.
Hunter's exceptional skills on the field soon earned him recognition, and he was selected to play for the North Island team in 1904. The same year, he played against the touring Great Britain team, although he unfortunately suffered an injury the day before the match and was replaced.
However, his talent and determination didn't go unnoticed. In 1905, he captained the North Island to a resounding 26-0 victory over the South Island, which also served as a trial for the All Blacks team touring the British Isles that year.
Hunter was selected for the historic 1905 All Blacks tour, which comprised 35 matches across the Northern Hemisphere. Although Dave Gallaher took over as captain and Billy Stead as vice-captain, Hunter played an integral role in the team, participating in 24 matches.
His first match on tour was against Devon in Exeter, where he scored eight points. This tour marked a significant milestone in Hunter's career, solidifying his position as a trailblazing rugby union footballer.
After returning from the tour, Hunter continued to play for the All Blacks until his retirement in 1908. Following his rugby career, he went on to lead a quiet life, focusing on his farming endeavors.
