Lead vocalist and founder of the alternative rock band Bloodhound Gang, known for humorous and often provocative lyrics in hits like "The Bad Touch" and "Fire Water Burn".
Jimmy Pop was born on August 27, 1972, in Trappe, Pennsylvania, to Alice Ann and Richard Lee Franks. He is of German and Native American heritage, with Jewish ancestry. Pop was raised Lutheran but stopped practicing as soon as his parents allowed him to. He graduated from Perkiomen Valley High School in 1990 and studied mass communication and history at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he met future Bloodhound Gang bassist Jared Hennegan.
Before forming Bloodhound Gang, Pop played in a Depeche Mode cover band called Bang Chamber 8 with Mike Bowe, later known as Daddy Long Legs. The band released a cassette with four original songs in 1990, which had no connection to the Bloodhound Gang's style. Bang Chamber 8 disbanded in 1991.
In 1992, Pop and Daddy Long Legs started the Bloodhound Gang, which initially began as a hip-hop group but eventually transitioned into an alternative rock band. The band gained popularity with their debut album Use Your Fingers in 1995, but it was their second album One Fierce Beer Coaster in 1996 that brought them mainstream success.
Jimmy Pop's lyrics often touch on themes of satire, social commentary, and anti-authoritarianism. He has cited influences such as Depeche Mode, The Clash, and Public Enemy, which are reflected in Bloodhound Gang's eclectic sound.
Bloodhound Gang's music has been praised for its originality and humor, and Jimmy Pop's distinctive vocal style has been emulated by many. The band's provocative lyrics and performances have also sparked controversy, but Pop remains unapologetic about his art.
"I never wanted to be a role model. I just wanted to make people laugh and have a good time." - Jimmy Pop
