Jo Gartner, born Josef Anton Gartner, was a skilled Austrian Formula One and sports car endurance driver, known for his impressive performance in the 1984 season, participating in eight Grands Prix for Osella.
Gartner was born on January 24, 1954, in Vienna, Austria. He began his career in the world of motorsports in 1972, working for the Kaimann Formula Super Vee team in a technical capacity. A few years later, he started competing in hillclimbing events, eventually moving to the European Formula Super Vee championship in 1977.
Gartner's talent and dedication earned him a spot in the European Formula Three Championship in 1979, where he drove a Martini with support from Renault. He then moved to Formula Two in 1980, driving a two-year-old March. His performance in Formula Two led to an invitation to participate in the BMW M1 Procar Championship series, where he raced against Formula One drivers.
In 1984, Gartner joined Osella, participating in eight Grands Prix, although he didn't score any points. Despite this, his experience and skills behind the wheel made him a respected figure in the Formula One community.
Gartner also had a successful career in sports car endurance racing, participating in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, it was during one of these events that his life was tragically cut short in 1986.
