She graduated from Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, California, at the age of 16 and went on to earn a Liberal Arts degree from California State University, Sacramento. Lunden further pursued her education in Spanish and anthropology at the former Mexico City campus of Universidad de Las Americas.

Lunden's broadcasting career began in 1973 as a trainee at Channel 3 KCRATV in Sacramento, California. Within two years, she became the co-anchor of the daily noon television news program, producing the noon news broadcast and hosting KCRAs television specials. Her talent and dedication earned her a move to New York City in 1975, where she joined New York's WABCTV Eyewitness News, subsequently changing her name to Lunden to avoid being mistakenly called "Blunder." A year later, she became co-anchor on the weekend newscasts.
