A talented actress and singer who originated the role of Laurey in the 1943 Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, earning a Tony Award for her performance.
Renowned American actress Joan Roberts is best known for creating the iconic role of Laurey in the original Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! in 1943. This groundbreaking musical catapulted Roberts to stardom, earning her a permanent place in the hearts of theatre enthusiasts.
Born Josephine Rose Seagrist on July 15, 1917, in Manhattan, New York, Roberts was raised in Astoria, Queens. She first took to the stage at the tender age of 6, foreshadowing a lifelong passion for the performing arts.
As a student at St. Patrick's Cathedral Manhattan High School, Roberts actively participated in dramatic productions, refining her skills and gathering experience. She further honed her craft under the guidance of esteemed singing teacher Estelle Liebling, who also mentored the legendary Beverly Sills.
Roberts' radio career took off with her regular appearance on The Texaco Summer Theater on CBS, which aired from July 4 to December 5, 1943. She made her Broadway debut in Sunny River, playing Madeleine Caresse from December 4, 1941, to January 3, 1942.
In 1942, she starred in Hit the Deck with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera before auditioning for the role of Ado Annie in Oklahoma! Although she didn't land the part, librettist Oscar Hammerstein recognized her talent and cast her as the female lead, Laurey.
At the time of her passing on August 13, 2012, Roberts was one of four surviving cast members of the original 1943 Oklahoma! production and the only one who played a principal role. She continued to inspire future generations of performers, teaching voice lessons and presenting workshops on singing and voice projection.
In 2011, the University of North Carolina's School of the Arts mounted a production of Oklahoma! that replicated the original Broadway staging. Roberts and fellow original cast member Celeste Holm attended the production, celebrating the timeless magic of the musical.
Joan Roberts' remarkable journey serves as a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and passion for the performing arts. Her iconic portrayal of Laurey in Oklahoma! continues to captivate audiences, solidifying her place as a true legend of American theatre.
