Founded a media company that owned several TV stations and published Politico, a prominent political news outlet, known for shaping American political discourse.
Joe Allbritton was a multifaceted American entrepreneur, leaving an indelible mark on the banking, publishing, and philanthropic industries. Best known for his entrepreneurial spirit, Allbritton built a vast media empire, including the Washington Star, NewsChannel 8, and Politico, which continues to shape the American political landscape.
Born on December 29, 1924, in DLo, Mississippi, Allbritton was the sixth of seven children. His family soon relocated to Houston, Texas, where his father owned a small business. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Allbritton went on to complete his undergraduate degree and law degree from Baylor University, where he was a national champion debater.
With a keen eye for opportunity, Allbritton borrowed $5,000 to buy land outside Houston, which was later used in the construction of a freeway connecting Houston and Galveston, earning him a small fortune. This early success laid the foundation for his future business ventures, including chairing Houston International Bank, Houston Citizens Bank, and University Bankshares.
In 1975, Allbritton purchased The Washington Star along with its television station and smaller stations in the south. Although he was forced to divest the newspaper in 1978, this marked the beginning of his company, Allbritton Communications, which would go on to include WJLA-TV, NewsChannel 8, and the short-lived Internet venture, TBD. His son, Robert Allbritton, now runs Politico, a flagship news organization that has become a staple of American political journalism.
In 1981, Allbritton became chairman of Riggs Bank, a position he held until 2001. However, his tenure was marred by controversy when the bank was investigated for money laundering and concealing funds for former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Allbritton resigned in 2001 due to health reasons, and his son Robert assumed the chairman position. The bank was later purchased by PNC in 2005.
Throughout his life, Allbritton was committed to philanthropic causes, supporting various organizations and institutions. His philanthropic efforts continue to have a lasting impact on the communities he touched.
Joe Allbritton's remarkable life serves as a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit, business acumen, and commitment to philanthropy. His legacy continues to shape the American media landscape and inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and leaders.
