Joe Dowell was an American pop singer who rose to fame in the 1960s with his soulful voice and catchy tunes. He is perhaps best known for his chart-topping hit "Wooden Heart," which became the first single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for Smash Records.
Born on January 23, 1940, in Bloomington, Indiana, Dowell moved to Bloomington, Illinois, with his family at a young age. He discovered his passion for music early on and began performing at local talent shows and events. After attending the University of Illinois, he was discovered by a talent scout and subsequently signed with Smash Records.
Dowell's big break came with the release of "Wooden Heart," a song that had previously been a hit for Elvis Presley in Europe but had not been released as a single in the United States. Backed by organist Ray Stevens, Dowell's version of the song shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling over one million copies and earning a gold disc.
Following the success of "Wooden Heart," Dowell released two more hits, "The Bridge of Love" and "Little Red Rented Rowboat," which reached No. 50 and No. 23 on the charts, respectively. However, due to contractual obligations, Dowell was limited in his ability to write and record his own music, leading to creative struggles and eventually, his departure from Smash Records.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Dowell went on to record several singles and a gospel album for his own label, Journey Records. He also recorded a bicentennial EP for the Boy Scouts of America and radio jingles. In 2004, Bear Family Records released a CD featuring Dowell's music, including unreleased recordings.
In 2016, Dowell passed away on February 4, at the age of 76, after suffering a heart attack.
