Born on November 22, 1974, in Houston, Texas, Nathan grew up in Middletown, New York. He began his baseball career as a shortstop in high school and college, but was converted to a pitcher after being drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1995.
Nathan worked his way through the minor leagues, alternating between spots in the rotation and the bullpen. He made his MLB debut in 1999, becoming the first player from Stony Brook University to reach the majors. After a few years of splitting time between the major and minor leagues, Nathan had a breakout season as a setup man for the Giants in 2003.
