Born on December 18, 1937, in the Bronx, New York, Hirschhorn's fascination with music began at a young age. He attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, where he honed his skills as a singer and performer. After graduating, he became a regular on New York's nightclub circuit, both as a solo artist and as a member of the rock 'n' roll band, The Highlighters.
Hirschhorn's foray into film soundtracks began in the mid-1960s. His first score was for the 1965 film "Who Killed Teddy Bear," directed by his friend Joseph Cates. Although his subsequent work on "The Fat Spy" (1966) received negative reviews, Hirschhorn persevered and eventually found success with his collaboration with Al Kasha on "The Cheyenne Social Club" (1970).
The 1972 film "The Poseidon Adventure" marked a significant milestone in Hirschhorn's career. The song "The Morning After," written in collaboration with Al Kasha, not only earned them their first Oscar but also topped the Billboard chart. This success was followed by another Oscar win for "We May Never Love Like This Again" from "The Towering Inferno" (1974).
Hirschhorn and Kasha continued to work together, receiving two further Oscar nominations for their work on "Pete's Dragon" (1977). The duo also ventured into Broadway, earning Tony Award nominations for Best Original Score for "Copperfield" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."
In the late 1990s, Hirschhorn and Kasha parted ways, with Hirschhorn going on to write "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Songwriting," published in 2001. Throughout his illustrious career, Hirschhorn has left an enduring impact on the music industry, with his iconic hits continuing to inspire new generations of musicians and songwriters.
