Joey Jordison, also known as #1, was the original drummer and founding member of the iconic heavy metal band Slipknot. With his unique drumming style and energetic stage presence, Jordison played a crucial role in shaping the band's sound and identity.
Born on April 26, 1975, in Des Moines, Iowa, Jordison grew up in a rural area outside of Waukee. His parents, Steve and Jackie Jordison, introduced him to music at a young age, and he credits them for instilling in him a passion for music. Jordison's parents divorced when he was young, and he lived with his sisters, who would later inspire him to take up drumming.
In 1995, Jordison joined the band The Pale Ones, which would later become Slipknot. He was the third member to join the band, and his drumming skills quickly became an integral part of their sound. With Slipknot, Jordison performed on their first five studio albums, including their self-titled debut, Slipknot, Iowa, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), All Hope Is Gone, and .5: The Gray Chapter.
In addition to his work with Slipknot, Jordison was the guitarist for the horror punk supergroup Murderdolls. He also founded the band Scar the Martyr, which formed in 2013 and disbanded in 2016. Jordison's session work included performances with renowned bands such as Rob Zombie, Metallica, Korn, Ministry, Otep, and Satyricon.
Jordison's drumming style was known for its intensity and technicality. He cited drummers such as Neil Peart, Dave Lombardo, and Gene Hoglan as influences. Jordison was also known for his use of Pearl drums, and later, ddrum.
Jordison won several awards with Slipknot, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance for the song "My Plague" in 2003. He also won several Kerrang! Awards, including Best International Band and Best Album for Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).
Jordison struggled with health issues, including acute transverse myelitis, which left him unable to walk or move. Despite his health struggles, Jordison continued to create music until his untimely death on July 26, 2021. His legacy as a drummer and founding member of Slipknot continues to inspire and influence metal musicians around the world.
