John Ashley is renowned for his exceptional officiating skills in the National Hockey League (NHL), earning him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981. As one of the most respected referees in the history of the sport, Ashley is credited with officiating every Game Seven in the Stanley Cup playoffs from 1964 to 1972.
Born on March 5, 1930, in Galt, Ontario, Ashley grew up in Preston and developed a passion for hockey from a young age. He played junior hockey with the Toronto Marlies and Guelph Biltmores before trying out for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1950. Although he didn't make the cut, Ashley went on to play on farm teams in Pittsburgh and Syracuse, New York.
Ashley began his officiating career in 1959, marking the start of an illustrious journey that would span over a decade. In 1964, he became the first referee to officiate every Game Seven in the Stanley Cup playoffs, a feat he repeated for eight consecutive years.
In the 1971 Stanley Cup playoffs, Ashley achieved a remarkable milestone by officiating the seventh game of all three series that went the limit – a quarterfinal between Montreal and Boston, a semifinal between New York and Chicago, and the final between Montreal and Chicago.
Ashley passed away on January 5, 2008, in Kitchener, Ontario, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire hockey enthusiasts around the world.
