Crawford's musical journey began in junior high school, where a broken leg led him to pick up a guitar during his recovery. He soon began taking lessons in Fullerton, California, where he connected with future Berlin band members Dan Van Patten, Chris Velasco, and Tyson Cobb. This chance encounter sparked a lifelong passion for music and laid the groundwork for Berlin's formation.
Crawford's early influences included punk rockers like the Sex Pistols and synth-pop pioneers Ultravox, as well as the theatricality of KISS. Following Berlin's initial disbandment, Crawford worked with other Orange County-based bands, including The Videos and Fahrenheit.
