Born on July 8, 1935, in Marion, Louisiana, Crow grew up in Springhill, where he developed a passion for football. He graduated from Springhill High School in 1954 and went on to pursue his love for the sport at Texas A&M University.
Under the tutelage of coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, Crow excelled as a halfback, leading the Texas A&M Aggies to several victories. His outstanding performance in 1957 earned him the coveted Heisman Trophy, a testament to his exceptional athleticism and dedication to the sport.

He later returned to Texas A&M as an assistant athletic director in 1983 and eventually became the athletic director in 1988, serving until 1993.
