Born on November 8, 1946, in Moonee Ponds, a suburb of Melbourne, John Farrar grew up in a large household with aunts and uncles. His mother bought him a country music guitar at the age of twelve, sparking his passion for music.
Farrar started playing in a band, The Jaguars, with his older brother Reg in 1961. After relocating to nearby Niddrie in 1963, he played with several rock and roll groups, including The Mustangs, The Strangers, Marvin, Welch & Farrar, and The Shadows.
In 1971, Farrar began working with Olivia Newton-John, writing and producing some of her most iconic hits, including "Have You Never Been Mellow" (1975), "You're the One That I Want" (1978), a duet with John Travolta, "Hopelessly Devoted to You" (1978), and "Magic" (1980).
As a producer, Farrar was instrumental in shaping Newton-John's music career, producing the majority of her recorded material during that time, including her number one albums, "If You Love Me, Let Me Know" (1974), "Have You Never Been Mellow" (1975), and "Olivia's Greatest Hits Vol. 2" (1982).
Farrar's work with Newton-John earned him a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1975 for "I Honestly Love You." He was also a co-producer of the soundtrack for the film "Grease" (1978).
In 1969, Farrar married Australian singer Pat Carroll, who had been Newton-John's singing partner. The couple has two sons, Sam Farrar, bassist of Phantom Planet and Maroon 5, and Max Farrar, a composer and producer who has worked with Lewis Capaldi and The Script.
