John Lloyd was born on April 15, 1946, in Anstruther, Fife, Scotland, where he was raised by his grandparents and mother, a beautician. After completing his early education at Waid Academy, Lloyd ventured to Canada, working as a caddie before returning to the UK to pursue higher education. He graduated with an upper-second-class MA Hons degree in English literature from the University of Edinburgh in 1967.
Lloyd's journalistic prowess led him to assume various roles, including East European editor and Moscow correspondent for the Financial Times from 1991 to 1995. He briefly served as editor of the New Statesman in 1986 before returning to the Financial Times. Lloyd later became a columnist for The Times from 1997 to 1998 and associate editor of the New Statesman from 1996 to 2003.
