A fierce NFL defensive lineman and actor, known for his intimidating on-field presence and memorable roles in films like "The Goonies" and "North Dallas Forty".
John Matuszak, affectionately known as "Tooz," was an American football defensive end and actor who left an indelible mark on both the sports and entertainment industries. With a storied career that spanned over a decade, Matuszak's impressive physique, unbeatable strength, and charming on-screen presence made him a force to be reckoned with.
Born on October 25, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Matuszak grew up in a family plagued by cystic fibrosis, which claimed the lives of two of his brothers and affected one of his sisters. This personal struggle fueled Matuszak's determination to build his physique, and he went on to become the Wisconsin Class A state champion in the shot put with an impressive throw of 58 ft 11 in.
Matuszak's athletic prowess earned him a spot on the University of Missouri's football team, where he played as a tight end. However, it was his transfer to the University of Tampa that truly launched his football career. In 1973, the Houston Oilers drafted Matuszak as the first overall pick, marking the beginning of his remarkable NFL journey.
Throughout his career, Matuszak played for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, earning two Super Bowl rings and establishing himself as a formidable force on the field. In 1978, he participated in the World's Strongest Man competition, finishing ninth.
After retiring from football in 1981, Matuszak turned his attention to acting. His debut role as O.W. Shaddock in the 1979 film North Dallas Forty set the stage for a successful acting career. He went on to appear in films like Caveman (1981) and The Goonies (1985), as well as various television shows.
In 1987, Matuszak co-authored his biography, Cruisin' with the Tooz, with Steve Delsohn. Tragically, Matuszak's life was cut short when he passed away on June 17, 1989, at the age of 38.
Despite his untimely passing, Matuszak's impact on both football and Hollywood remains significant. His larger-than-life personality, unmistakable charm, and dedication to his craft continue to inspire generations of athletes and actors alike.
Matuszak's trailblazing career has inspired countless athletes and actors to pursue their passions. His larger-than-life persona and charismatic on-screen presence have cemented his place as a beloved figure in American popular culture.
