John Francis O'Shea, born on April 30, 1981, is an Irish professional football coach and former player, renowned for his versatility in playing multiple defensive and midfield positions on either side of the pitch or in the center.
During his illustrious career, O'Shea won an impressive 14 winners' medals, making him one of the most decorated Irish footballers of all time, alongside football greats Denis Irwin, Roy Keane, Steve Heighway, and Ronnie Whelan.
O'Shea was born in County Waterford and grew up in Ferrybank. He joined Manchester United at the tender age of 17, where he spent loan spells at AFC Bournemouth and Royal Antwerp before establishing himself in the Manchester United first team.
Over 12 seasons, O'Shea made an impressive 393 appearances and scored 15 goals in all competitions for Manchester United. In 2011, he joined Sunderland, where he played 256 times and scored four goals, before moving to Championship side Reading in 2018.
O'Shea made his Republic of Ireland debut in 2001 against Croatia and went on to make 118 appearances for his national team over the next 17 years, scoring three goals. His first goal came in 2003 against Australia.
O'Shea was part of the team that controversially lost to France in a playoff for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also played in UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016.
After retiring from professional football in 2019, O'Shea joined Reading's coaching staff. In the summer of 2021, he left Reading to coach Stoke City and later Birmingham City.
In 2024, O'Shea served as assistant manager on the under-21 and senior Republic of Ireland teams, as well as interim manager of the latter.
