Born on October 9, 1952, in Blantyre, Malawi, Rose was educated at Culford School and Charterhouse. He went on to earn his MA degree in psychology from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 1975. Rose's career began in banking, where he worked for the First National Bank of Chicago and Security Pacific. However, it was his move to Rolls-Royce in 1984 that marked the start of an incredible journey. He held various roles, including Director of Corporate Development from 1989 to 1994, and President and Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Inc. from 1993, responsible for the company's activities in North America.
In 1995, Rose became Managing Director of the Aerospace Group, and just a year later, he was appointed Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce, a position he held until 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw the company's significant growth, diversification, and innovation, including the development of new engine technologies and the expansion into new markets.

He was knighted in the 2003 New Year Honours, and in 2008, he was made a Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur. Additionally, he received the Singapore Public Service Star in 2008.
After retiring from Rolls-Royce in 2011, Rose became deputy chairman of the Rothschild Group. He has also served as a non-executive director and chairman of Holdingham Group, a strategic intelligence company later renamed Hakluyt & Company.
