John Stewart, the American singer-songwriter, is best known for his significant contributions to the 1960s American folk music movement and his chart-topping hit "Daydream Believer," which catapulted the Monkees to stardom. Throughout his four-decade-long solo career, Stewart released nearly four dozen albums and over 600 recorded songs, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in popular music.
Born in San Diego on September 5, 1939, Stewart grew up in Southern California, surrounded by the cities of Pasadena and Claremont. His father, John S. Stewart, was a horse trainer, and his early life was marked by a passion for music, which was sparked by his love for the Sons of the Pioneers and Tex Ritter. He began playing the guitar and banjo at a young age and even composed his first song, "Shrunken Head Boogie," when he was just ten years old.
Stewart's musical journey began with his high school garage band, Johnny Stewart and the Furies, which toured Southern California colleges and coffee houses, releasing a single, "Rockin' Anna," in 1957. After the Furies disbanded, Stewart formed the Cumberland Three with Gil Robbins (father of actor Tim Robbins) and John Montgomery, a group modeled after the Kingston Trio.
Stewart's breakthrough came when he joined the Kingston Trio in 1961, replacing Dave Guard. During his six-year stint with the group, they released several albums, including The New Frontier, Time to Think, and Sunny Knots. His tenure with the Kingston Trio marked the beginning of his prolific songwriting career, which would go on to yield over 600 recorded songs.
In 1967, Stewart embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album,
