John Watson, a British former racing driver, is renowned for his 14-year Formula One (F1) career, which saw him win five Grands Prix and secure third place in the 1982 championship. Today, he is equally celebrated as a respected commentator, having lent his voice to Eurosport's F1 coverage from 1989 to 1996, and more recently, to the GT World Challenge Europe.
Born on May 4, 1946, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Watson was educated at Rockport School. His F1 career began in 1972, driving a customer March-Cosworth 721 for Goldie Hexagon Racing in a non-Championship event, the World Championship Victory Race at Brands Hatch.
Watson's first World Championship events came in the 1973 season, where he raced in the British Grand Prix in a customer Brabham-Ford BT37, and the US Grand Prix, driving the third works Brabham BT42. Although these initial outings were not particularly successful, Watson persevered, scoring his first World Championship point in the 1974 Monaco Grand Prix while driving for Goldie Hexagon Racing.
After retiring from motorsport, Watson transitioned into a successful commentary career, working with Eurosport from 1989 to 1996. More recently, he has commentated on the GT World Challenge Europe and the 2022 Miami F1 Grand Prix for F1TV.
