Australian drummer, songwriter, and producer behind the iconic rock band INXS, known for hits like "Need You Tonight" and "Devil Inside".
As the drummer and founding member of the Australian rock band INXS, Jon Farriss is renowned for his innovative approach to traditional rock drums, infusing them with funk, dance, and electronic elements. His distinctive style has been the driving force behind some of the band's most iconic hits, including "Need You Tonight" and "The Stairs."
Born on August 10, 1961, to Dennis and Jill Farriss, Jon was the second youngest of four children, including brothers Andrew and Tim, and younger sister Alison. Music was an integral part of his upbringing, with his family encouraging his passion from a young age. At just nine years old, Jon auditioned to join the band Guinness, alongside future INXS bandmates Kirk Pengilly and brother Tim, but was rejected due to his tender age.
Undeterred, Jon continued to hone his skills, playing with various bands, including Top Kat, Blackwater, and Fish. His big break came when he teamed up with his brothers and friends to form INXS, a band that would go on to define the Australian rock scene in the 1980s and 1990s.
Farriss's influence on INXS's sound cannot be overstated. His innovative drumming style, which blended traditional rock with funk, dance, and electronic elements, helped to create the band's distinctive sound. He also lent his vocals to many of INXS's early albums, showcasing his versatility as a musician.
In 2010, Farriss took on the role of co-executive producer for INXS's tribute album, Original Sin, working alongside artists such as Rob Thomas, Ben Harper, Tricky, John Mayer, and Pat Monahan to reimagine some of the band's classic tracks.
In February 2013, Jon had the opportunity to share the stage with Ringo Starr during his All Starr Band performance in Sydney, playing drums to The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends." The same year, he was recognized on stage by Nile Rodgers at the iconic Sydney Opera House, who credited Jon's live performance as the inspiration to work with INXS.
Jon Farriss's influence on modern rock music is undeniable. As the rhythmic heartbeat of INXS, he helped to shape the band's sound and style, which continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike. His innovative approach to drumming and his contributions to the band's songwriting process have cemented his place as one of the most respected and beloved drummers in rock history.
