With a storied career spanning over two decades, Gruden has etched his mark as one of the most successful coaches in the NFL, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first Super Bowl title in 2002.
Born on August 17, 1963, in Sandusky, Ohio, Gruden hails from a family of Slovene descent. His father, Jim, was a professional football regional scout, quarterbacks coach, and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden's younger brother, Jay, played and coached in the Arena Football League, while his other brother, James, is a radiologist.
Gruden's coaching career began in 1990 as an offensive assistant for the University of Tennessee. He quickly made a name for himself, becoming the youngest head coach in the NFL in 1998 with the Oakland Raiders. During his four-year stint, he led the team to two consecutive division titles and an AFC Championship Game appearance.
In 2002, Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led the team to their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XXXVII. At age 39, he became the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl. Gruden went on to set the franchise record for wins, making two further playoff runs before his departure in 2008.
After his departure from the Buccaneers, Gruden became a popular analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcasts from 2009 to 2017. In 2018, he returned to the Oakland Raiders as their head coach, leading the team until his resignation in 2021 amidst controversy surrounding racist, misogynistic, and homophobic emails.
In 2021, Gruden's tenure with the Raiders came to an abrupt end when emails from 2011 to 2018 surfaced, containing offensive language and slurs. The fallout led to his resignation and removal from the Buccaneers' Ring of Honor. In 2023, he was brought in by the New Orleans Saints for a workout for their offensive coaching staff.
