A product of the University of Miami, Jay played college baseball for the Miami Hurricanes, where he honed his skills and caught the attention of Major League Baseball (MLB) scouts. The St. Louis Cardinals selected him as their second-round pick (74th overall) in the 2006 MLB draft, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Jay made his MLB debut in 2010, batting .301 with 4 home runs, a .780 on-base plus slugging percentage, and 2 stolen bases in 105 games. His impressive performance earned him a spot as the starting center fielder for four consecutive National League Championship Series (NLCS)-qualifying clubs as a Cardinal (2011-2014).
