Born on January 31, 1947, in Washington, D.C., Banks grew up in Chillum Heights, Maryland. His father was a civil servant, and his mother, a professor at Indiana State University, held various roles in federal government offices, including the CIA, and served as a private secretary to top Naval officers, including Admiral Chester Nimitz.

Banks graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring and attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he developed an interest in theater.

Rise to Prominence

In 1974, Banks moved to Los Angeles, marking the beginning of his journey in the entertainment industry. He began landing supporting roles in films and television, including Stir Crazy (1980), Airplane (1980), and 48 Hrs. (1982).

His breakthrough came with the role of FBI Special Agent Frank McPike in Wiseguy (1987-1990), earning him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
