Jonathan King, born Kenneth George King, is a British singer, songwriter, and record producer who rose to fame in the 1960s with his chart-topping hit "Everyone's Gone to the Moon." This talented artist is also credited with discovering and naming the iconic rock band Genesis, producing their debut album "From Genesis to Revelation."
However, King's illustrious music career was marred by scandal when he was convicted of sexually abusing five teenage boys in 2001. This dark episode led to a seven-year prison sentence, effectively ending his reign in the music industry.
King was born on December 6, 1944, in a nursing home in Marylebone, London, to George Frederick John "Jimmy" King, a managing director at Tootal, a tie manufacturer, and Ailsa Linley Leon, a former actress. His father, originally from New Jersey, had moved to England at the age of 14.
In 1965, King's song "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" became a surprise hit, propelling him into the limelight. He went on to produce and release numerous hits under various pseudonyms, including "Johnny Reggae," "Loop di Love," and "Una Paloma Blanca."
In 1972, King founded his own record label, UK Records, which became a platform for launching the careers of prominent bands like 10cc and the Bay City Rollers. During this period, he produced an impressive six top 30 singles in the UK between September 1971 and 1972.
In the 1980s, King became a familiar face on British television and radio, appearing on popular shows like the BBC's "Top of the Pops" and "Entertainment USA."
In the 1990s, King produced the Brit Awards and, in 1997, selected and produced the winning British entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, "Love Shine a Light" by Katrina and the Waves.
In 2001, King was convicted of child sexual abuse and sentenced to seven years in prison. Although acquitted of 22 similar charges in November 2001, his reputation was forever tarnished. King was released on parole in March 2005, but faced further trial for sexual offenses against teenage boys in 2018, which resulted in several not guilty verdicts and the trial being abandoned.
