Born on April 24, 1947, in Mafra, Diocese of Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, Aviz was the youngest of seven siblings, with one sister having Down syndrome. He pursued his philosophical studies at the Major Seminary Rainha dos Apostolos in Curitiba and the Faculty of Palmas. Aviz then completed his theological studies in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University, earning a licentiate, and later graduated with a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in 1992.

Priesthood and Ministry

Ordained a priest on November 26, 1972, Aviz began his ministry as a parish priest in the diocese of Apucarana. He also served as Rector of the Major Seminary Apucarana and Londrina, and as professor of dogmatic theology at the Theological Institute Paul VI in Londrina. During this time, Aviz was a member of the Council of Priests and the College of Consultors and General Coordinator of the Diocesan Pastoral Apucarana.

A Near-Death Experience

In a remarkable display of courage and resilience, Aviz once survived an armored car robbery while on his way to say Mass in a village. Caught in the crossfire, he was shot, with bullets perforating his lungs and intestines and one eye. Despite the severity of his injuries, Aviz made a full recovery, with surgeons saving his eye, and still carries fragments of those bullets in his body to this day.

Episcopate and Career Highlights

On April 6, 1994, Aviz was appointed as the titular bishop of Flenucleta as auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Vitória. He went on to serve as bishop of Ponta Grossa from 1998 to 2002, archbishop of Maringá from 2002 to 2004, and archbishop of Brasília from 2004 to 2011.
