Jos Fernández, the Cuban-born American baseball pitcher, left an indelible mark on the world of sports during his brief yet illustrious career. Born on July 31, 1992, in Santa Clara, Cuba, Fernández grew up with a passion for baseball, inspired by his friend and future MLB shortstop Aledmys DÃaz. The two played on the same youth baseball team, and DÃaz's uncle encouraged Fernández's mother to bring him to the ballpark.
Fernández's stepfather, Ramón Jiménez, defected from Cuba in 2005 and settled in Tampa, Florida. This led Fernández to make three unsuccessful attempts to defect, each resulting in prison time. On his fourth attempt in 2008, he finally succeeded in reaching the United States.
Fernández enrolled at Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida, where he honed his skills and caught the attention of MLB scouts. The Miami Marlins selected him in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft.
He made his MLB debut with the Marlins on April 7, 2013, and quickly made a name for himself as a talented and fearless pitcher. Fernández was named to the 2013 National League All-Star Team and won the National League Rookie of the Month Award in July and August.
Tragedy struck on September 25, 2016, when Fernández and two other men were killed in a boating accident off the coast of Miami Beach, Florida.
