Born on November 21, 1924, in Manhattan, New York City, to Sicilian immigrants Philip and Mary O. Campanella, Joseph grew up in a family of artists. His father, a pianist, and his mother, a homemaker and dressmaker, instilled in him a love for the arts from a young age. Joseph was the younger brother of actor Frank Campanella (1919-2006) and had another brother named Philip. The Campanella family, staunchly Catholic, lived in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, where Joseph and his brothers grew up speaking Italian before learning English.
After serving in the United States Navy during World War II as a landing craft commander, Joseph attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1948. He later studied drama at Columbia University. Prior to starting his acting career, Joseph worked as a radio sportscaster in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. His breakthrough came when he landed the role of Joe Turino on Guiding Light, which marked the beginning of his long and successful career in television and film.
Throughout his illustrious career, Joseph Campanella received several award nominations, including a Daytime Emmy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Tony Award.
