First Asian to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100m butterfly event, breaking Michael Phelps' streak.
Joseph Schooling is the poster child of Singaporean swimming, etching his name in history as the country's first-ever Olympic gold medalist. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he stunned the world by defeating American swimming sensation Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly event, clocking a record-breaking time of 50.39s.
Schooling was born on June 16, 1995, in Singapore to a family with a rich sporting heritage. His father, Colin, was a hurdler and water polo player who represented Singapore, while his mother, May, was a tennis player who had moved to Singapore from Perak. His great-grandfather, a British military officer, married a Portuguese-Eurasian in Singapore, giving Schooling a unique Eurasian ancestry.
Schooling's passion for swimming was ignited by his granduncle, Lloyd Valberg, Singapore's first Olympian who participated in the 1948 Summer Olympics. He began his swimming journey at Anglo-Chinese School Junior and later attended the Bolles School in Florida, United States. Under the guidance of Coach Sergio Lopez Miro, Schooling's talent blossomed, and he qualified for the 2012 Olympics at the age of 17.
In April 2024, Schooling announced his retirement from competitive swimming to focus on his swim school and other business ventures. His decision to hang up his goggles marked the end of an era, but it also paved the way for him to give back to the community that had supported him throughout his journey.
Schooling's remarkable journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and perseverance. From being inspired by his granduncle to becoming an Olympic champion, he has inspired a generation of young swimmers in Singapore and beyond. His legacy extends beyond his impressive medal tally, as he has brought pride and recognition to his country and continues to contribute to the development of swimming in Singapore.
Joseph Schooling's story is one of triumph, dedication, and passion. As he embarks on a new chapter in his life, his legacy as Singapore's first Olympic gold medalist will continue to inspire generations to come.
