Gulbrandsen is the leader of the Jostein Gulbrandsen Quartet, which includes saxophonist Jon Irabagon, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Jeff Davis. The quartet released its debut album, Twelve, in 2007, showcasing Gulbrandsen's exceptional compositional skills. He is also the leader of the Jostein Gulbrandsen Trio, featuring bassist Ike Sturm and drummer Ronen Itzik, which released the album Release of Tension in 2012.

In addition to his own projects, Gulbrandsen has collaborated with several notable musicians, including Nate Smith, Randal, and Matt Grason. He has also performed as part of the GulbrandsenYonezawa Duo, showcasing his incredible guitar skills at various venues, including Smoke, Detour, B.B.
