Jostein Gulbrandsen is a New York-based Norwegian guitarist and composer, widely recognized for his exceptional talent and versatility in playing various styles of music. With a career spanning over two decades, he has made a significant impact on the international music scene, captivating audiences with his unique sound and technique.
Born on October 19, 1976, in Namsos, Norway, Gulbrandsen was drawn to music from a young age. He started playing the guitar at the age of 9 and later enrolled in the performing arts program at Nauma High School. His passion for jazz and classical guitar led him to study at Agder College of Music in Kristiansand, Norway, and later at the University of North Texas, where he was mentored by renowned musicians Fred Hamilton and Lynn Seaton.
In 2001, Gulbrandsen moved to New York City to pursue his Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where he was fortunate to study under the guidance of Chris Rosenberg, Dave Liebman, Garry Dial, and Phil Markowitz. He completed his Master's degree in 2003 and has since made New York City his home, working as a professional musician.
Gulbrandsen is the leader of the Jostein Gulbrandsen Quartet, which includes saxophonist Jon Irabagon, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Jeff Davis. The quartet released its debut album, Twelve, in 2007, showcasing Gulbrandsen's exceptional compositional skills. He is also the leader of the Jostein Gulbrandsen Trio, featuring bassist Ike Sturm and drummer Ronen Itzik, which released the album Release of Tension in 2012.
In addition to his own projects, Gulbrandsen has collaborated with several notable musicians, including Nate Smith, Randal, and Matt Grason. He has also performed as part of the GulbrandsenYonezawa Duo, showcasing his incredible guitar skills at various venues, including Smoke, Detour, B.B. King's Blues Bar, Kavehaz, Scandinavia House, Blues Alley, and Hard Rock Cafe.
Gulbrandsen has had the privilege of performing for the Norwegian Royal family and has appeared on national and public television in both Norway and the US. He has also performed at various international festivals and venues, including Scotland, England, and Japan.
