Born Judit Kaszab on August 15, 1920, in Vienna, Austria, to Jewish Hungarian parents, Cassab's artistic journey began at the tender age of twelve. She pursued her passion for art at the Academy of Art in Prague in 1938, but her studies were cut short by the German occupation in 1939.
During World War II, Cassab worked in a factory under an assumed name and utilized her artistic skills to forge papers and passports, risking her life to aid others. Her husband, Jancsi Kampfner, was forced into a labor camp by the Nazis, and the couple eventually reunited in 1944.
In 1951, Cassab, her husband, and two sons emigrated to Australia, where she became an Australian citizen in 1957. Her artistic career flourished in Sydney, with over fifty solo exhibitions across Australia, as well as in Paris and London.
Cassab's exceptional talent was recognized by the National Gallery, which acquired her work, and she was later interviewed by James Gleeson about her unique approach to capturing people's character in their portraits. This interview became part of the James Gleeson Oral History Collection.
