Notorious Finnish serial killer who terrorized rural Finland in the late 19th century, murdering several people, mostly women and children, and evading capture for years. Known for his brutal methods and ability to evade detection.
Juhani Aataminpoika, alias Kerpeikkari, is infamously known as Finland's first serial killer, leaving a trail of blood and terror in his wake. Between October and November of 1849, he brutally murdered 12 people in southern Finland, earning him a notorious place in the country's dark history.
Aataminpoika's life of crime began at a young age, abandoning his home at 15 to live a nomadic life of petty theft and mischief. In October 1849, he was imprisoned for stealing horses, but during transport to Hauho for his trial, he escaped, sparking a homicidal spree that would claim the lives of many innocent people.
Aataminpoika's killing spree took him from Lammi to Heinola, where he murdered his own family, including his parents and two children. He then traveled to the Saimaa Canal, killing more people along the way, including a sailor, to obtain his papers and assume a new identity.
Aataminpoika's reign of terror finally came to an end on November 20, 1849, when he was captured in Palsa, near the Lammi and Padasjoki border. Following his trial, the Vyborg Court of Appeal sentenced him to death, but the Emperor commuted the sentence to 40 lashes and life imprisonment.
In January 1853, Aataminpoika was transferred to Suomenlinna, where he spent the remainder of his life chained to a wall, a grim reminder of the horrors he had unleashed upon Finland. Though his legacy is one of terror and tragedy, Aataminpoika's crimes serve as a stark reminder of the darker aspects of human nature.
Aataminpoika's gruesome crimes continue to haunt Finland's history, serving as a chilling reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked violence and chaotic desires.
